Mining Drill Pipe

Extend Dill String Longevity…
   Optimize Connection Performance…
      Avoid Fishing for Broken Parts…
Eliminate Standoff, Lead, and Taper Errors…

Understanding and anticipating problems in sub-surface and blast hole mining are key in reducing maintenance and operational costs. An important factor in determining the reliability of the connections in the drill string is proper thread inspection.

Gagemaker’s JSS® Drill Pipe Thread Inspection System will help identify improperly manufactured threads and prevent costly connection failure before the mining drill pipe goes underground. The JSS®system is a comprehensive inspection method developed by Gagemaker to accurately gauge the quality of a connection through inspecting the critical attributes of a thread.

Proper inspection and preventative maintenance on a routine basis are the best measures to preventing connections failure. With the JSS® method you can ensure stronger joint connections and reduce expensive rework charges on pipe by inspecting some key thread elements.

Insert Identification

Insert-IdentificationThe first step in the quality process is to ensure the threading insert being used is correct for the job.

Use the JSS® Thread Insert Identifier Template to quickly verify that the correct threading insert has been selected as well as check the full topping profile of both internal and external inserts.

A quick mating of the insert to the template ensures the insert is correct for the job.

JSS insert identifiers have multiple notches on each template and are available for all API thread forms.

Gagemaker’s rotary shouldered connection thread insert identifier easily determines which threading insert the machinist is using.

When an optical comparator is unavailable, the insert identifier will show which thread form is on the insert.

Thread Form Inspection

thread_form Thread form accuracy is important if two connectors are to make-up properly. Thread form is the profile or shape of each thread and it controls how the threads mate as they are made-up. It’s important to be sure thread form is consistent from the starting thread to the ending thread. Using a JSS® Thread Profile Gage ensures thread accuracy by providing a quick check to determine if the form is correct and uniform. Also, checking thread form will ensure the first imperfect thread is fully deburred.

Thread form is defined as its profile in an axial plane for a length of one pitch. Most importantly, verifying thread form is a recommended inspection for API connections.

Thread Form

Gagemaker manufactures precision tapered thread profile gages for the quick identification of product thread forms. Specify the connection which is to be inspected when ordering. Special profiles will be quoted upon request.

Thread Pitch Diameter Inspection

IT-5104-RSC

Pitch diameter controls the strength of the thread assembly, and is the most critical measurement when inspecting threads. The JSS® Pitch Diameter Locating Templates and JSS® Pitch Diameter gages are a winning combination for pinpointing early signs of stress on both new and used pipe.

When the pitch diameter location templates are applied to the box or pin they can locate the proper thread where pitch diameter is to be measured. Using the internal or external pitch diameter gages allows control over the connection size during machining and ensures proper interference of thread cones when torqueing connections together.

The gages are adjustable within a size range and use interchangeable contact points to measure different pitch threads making very versatile. Before inspecting threads, the pitch diameter gage must be zeroed using the a setting standard.

Pitch Diameter Location

Pitch diameter location templates locate the point on the connection where the pitch diameter is measured. When applied properly to the connection, the template’s special layout mark indicates the proper thread to measure the pitch diameter.

A simple mark with a felt tip marking pen allows the operator or inspector to accurately position the gage and read a diameter. Please specify the threads per inch (TPI), taper per foot (TPF), and thread form when ordering.

Thread Lead Inspection

Gagemaker-LG-6001-hand

Thread lead has a direct impact on thread make-up because it affects the way the threads fit together. Lead is the distance from a point on a thread to a corresponding point on the next thread turn. Checking lead can tell you if the CNC lathe cutting the thread has a problem because the reading will vary from start to finish.

The JSS® Lead Gages use contact points that seat in the threads of a connection to inspect thread lead. Contact points are easily changed to allow measuring a variety of thread forms. The size of the contact points required for taking the measurements is determined by the pitch of the threads. The two models of the gage include the LG-6001 which measures external threads and the LG-6002 which measure internal threads.

Before inspecting threads, the lead gage must be preset to a predetermined dimension using the lead gage setting standard.

Features:
  • Interchangeable contact points allow inspection on a variety of thread forms and sizes.
  • Inspect mining drill pipe threads as well as mining casing threads
  • Requires presetting using Gagemaker’s lead gage setting standards.

Lead Gages

Thread lead is the distance between threads, measured on a plane parallel to the centerline of the threaded part. Lead gages verify the thread lead is within tolerance for both internal and external threads. They inspect thread lead by using contact points that seat in the threads of a part.  The pitch of the thread determines the diameter of the contact points required for taking measurements. API Specification 7-2 requires thread lead inspection.

The LG-6001 and the LG-6002 use a two-point system to inspect thread lead for straight and tapered threads. The LG-6002 inspects both external and internal threads, while the LG-6001 inspects external threads. The two point system allows for a sweeping action to obtain the measurement. Both gages are available with higher resolution indicators.

The LG-5003 uses the three-point system to inspect internal and external thread lead. Two fixed contact points at the rear of the gage and one movable contact point at the front of the gage provide complete stability when taking thread lead measurements. This unique design does not require sweeping to obtain measurements.

Contact points can be easily changed to allow the gage to be used on a variety of thread forms. Each gage comes with one set of contact points. Additional points are sold separately.

Before inspecting parts, the lead gage must be preset to a nominal predetermined dimension using a lead gage setting standard. Lead standards are available for both straight and tapered threads. Our setting standards are manufactured according to ANSI and API specifications, respectively.

Thread Taper Inspection

Gagemaker IT 6000

During the manufacturing process taper must be accurately measured because when a connection is subjected to a service load, taper error can lead to galling, improper fit between threads and eventually reduced performance. Taper is measured on the flanks of a thread and is defined as the change in pitch diameter over the connection length, generally designated in inches per foot.

The JSS® Taper Gages include the IT-6000 series for controlling pin taper values and the ET-7000 series for inspecting box tapers. Both sets of gages inspect variation in connection taper for a range of connection sizes using contact points which seat in the threads. Contact points can be changed out to accommodate different threads per inch.

The taper gages do not need presetting using a setting standard, but do require placing the contact points in the same helical path on several locations on the connection.

Gagemaker’s internal and external taper gages measure variations in connection taper to ensure that the pin and box connectors have matching tapers. Taper errors induce high stresses that can eventually lead to connection failures.

External Taper Gages

Gagemaker’s external taper gages inspect variation in connection taper. External taper gages are shipped with .072” diameter contact points unless otherwise requested. Gages for larger diameters are available. Verify the proper contact point for your particular connection. Higher resolution indicators are available.

Thread Height Inspection

TH-0000-on-Pin-TRAN-

Thread height is the distance from the crest of the thread to the root perpendicular to the thread axis. Shallow thread height does not allow sufficient thread engagement and may cause the connection to pull apart under critical loads.

The JSS® Thread Height Gages maximize the performance of threaded connections by providing immediate feedback on the integrity of the thread assembly. The TH-3000 series of thread height gages inspect external and internal thread height for a variety of thread forms. The gages use a precision contact point that seats in the threads of a part during inspection and provides readings on the indicator dial.

Placing the thread height gage on the setting standard to zero the gage before taking measurements will achieve consistent and accurate readings. There are several setting standard models and selecting the proper standard is based on the type of thread being inspected.

The thread height gages provide immediate feedback on the integrity of the threads. Specify the thread form when ordering.

External Thread Height

Gagemaker manufactures external thread height gages. Please specify the thread form when ordering. Gages ship with one contact point (T072), unless specified otherwise. Please verify the proper point for your connection before ordering. Standards sold separately.
