Gagemaker’s JSS® 6A Seal Ring Groove Inspection System
Subsea equipment or wellhead and christmas tree equipment have pressure energized ring seal gaskets or more specifically ring grooves. Not only do these seal gaskets require close tolerance inspection, the ring groove inspection on the flange is an API 6A requirement. The Gagemaker Ring Groove Inspection Gages reliably and accurately inspect all the important elements: – Major Diameter, Minor Diameter, and Groove Width. The system also offers groove width profiles and dog bone paddle gages as a dependable quick and easy receiving inspection.
JSS® 6A Seal Ring Groove Diameter Inspection Process
Ensure Your Grooves and Seals with the Gagemaker’s JSS 6A Ring Groove Diameter Inspection Kit
A ring groove is a closely dimensioned groove cut into the face of a pipe flange. Together with a gasket, a groove helps create a seal between parts, so it is important that a groove meets designated specifications.
API 6A ring grooves are divided into three ring types, BX, R, and RX. Each type has different configurations and is designated by the type and a number, i.e. BX 150, R 41, etc.
API mandates the inspection of ring grooves. The necessary dimensions of a groove are clearly specified in API 6A. To pass API requirements, these dimensions must be met. For BX Grooves, the groove’s major diameter and width are specified. For R and RX Grooves, API specifies the groove’s pitch diameter and width.
Inspection Setup
The Thread Disk™ engineering software (TDWin™) calculates critical dimensions for threads based on ANSI tables and formulas. Thread types supported by the program include: UN, UNJ and UNR Series, Acme, Stub Acme, Stub Acme Modified I and II, Metric M & MJ, 7° X 45° Buttress, and General Purpose Pipe Threads.
To generate critical dimensions instantly, enter basic thread information on the Thread Type Entry screen, such as: thread type, thread class, nominal diameter, and threads per inch. once the results are computed, tabs at the bottom of the program allow selection of several types of calculated information, including dimensions and tolerances for product threads, ring gages, set plugs, plug gages or Gagemaker’s Thread Diameter gages.
If measuring internal and external shallow taper diameters is a problem, the Ball mic SET DIM Tool provides setting dimensions for ball micrometers or Gagemaker’s BX-1000 groove gage. The program calculates ball mic settings for any tapered surface geometry.
Other features of the program include the ability to print thread dimension reports, providing a paper copy of any calculation. These reports provide the same critical dimensions that display in the program. A multiple calculation window capability is a feature that allows performing several different thread calculation at the same time.

Contact Points for Ring Groove Width Gages
Gagemaker’s offers contact points for our groove width gages for additional ranges than those provided by included points. Our standard ball contact points are manufactured with carbide balls. Gagemaker’s inspection gages use threaded shank contact points and are #4-48 UNF. Groove width gages require two points. Contact points are sold individually.
