Coupling Alignment

What are Alignment and Misalignment?

A coupling is aligned when the axis of each threaded taper cone is properly oriented to the other. If either or both axes are not correctly orientated, the coupling is misaligned and must be scrapped as it is out of specification.

Causes of Misalignment

Coupling alignment can be caused by a variety of issues including: improperly chucked parts, un-chucking & re-chucking parts between blanking and threading operations, or threading coupling stock whose ends were improperly sawed. Additionally, misalignment can occur if prior to turning the part, the chuck jaws are improperly bored out.

Material conditions also contribute to misalignment. When you thread coupling blanks with unturned outside diameters (OD), conditions are ripe for misalignment. These material issues include coupling stock with a bad out-of-round condition, such as tri-lobed or oval shaped raw material.

Identifying Potential Misalignment

Crossover
Typically, it isn’t necessary to check coupling alignment on every part. There are two simple techniques to better identify
couplings with potential misalignment.

The first technique is simply to look at the
“J area” of the coupling. Misaligned threads may show thread “cross-over” on one side and not on the other.

The second technique uses the over-all length of the coupling to recognize alignment issues. Lay the coupling on its side, and measure the over-all length on the outside of the coupling at 4 positions, 90 degrees apart around the coupling. If the over-all length varies, the part may be misaligned.

Inspecting and Quantifying Alignment / Misalignment

If these techniques lead you to suspect
misalignment, use a CA-9001 to properly quantify and record the measurement.

New Catalog: September Release

Bigger and Better

This year we’ve been working hard on a new catalog. The catalog is over twice the size of our previous… coming in at 156 pages.

The catalog has new pictures, updated product information, new products, and current products previously not featured in past catalogs.

Products and services are broken down into easier to navigate sections based on usage. A general product section that lists most of our complete product line is also included.

Online ordering will be available soon.
